Prancing and Sucking

I quit my job, sold my home, and drove around the country in the summer and fall of 2006, training BJJ, finding myself, and landing in LA. I still travel a lot and get to train in amazing places. Some of my friends are irritated that I "prance" around the world and think I "suck" for doing so.

American Nationals tournament was today

There was nobody for me to compete against. I was the only female purple belt registered at all, and other than me, there was a brown belt woman, a black belt woman, and I think two each of blue and white belt women, out of a couple hundred competitors. So I got my money back, which is a good thing.

I went anyway to cheer some teammates on. People did really well, and Johnny gave Bernie his brown belt and Noah his purple after they won their divisions. Congratulations to them!

I'm trying to think of any notable stuff that went on. But it was a typical tournament. I didn't take any pictures. Alicia took her usual bunch, though, so I'll check them out when they're up.

It was a long day. I was glad I wasn't competing. I don't think I would have represented well. And I'm excited to be taking a couple days off, though I'll still help Johnny teach on Mon and Wed. Now that I've finally decided to do it, I think it will be just what I need to shake the doldrums.

I kept thinking they were going to have a big warmup area where you can do some drilling to warm up but this tourney was pretty bare bones. Terrific scheduling and refs, but they didn't provide any warmup area (unless you consider a hard gym floor a warmup area, I don't).

I want to do it next year, but I'm not going to get "suckered" into signing up for my "real" age category since I didn't get a match. I'll drop down to masters next year, or adult if I feel REALLY feisty.

You shouldn't have taken a refund. Consider the signup fee your pro bono contribution to a good cause - the cause of well run tournaments. I can't see how you are in favor of supporting prostates (which only get men into trouble anyway!) but not in favor of supporting bjj. Think: "micro-philanthropy."

They were nice to give you your money back though.

I saw Jimmy competing. Are there any tourneys were he DOESN'T compete? He's like the nicest guy, I had to leave my bag with him a few minutes while looking for a water bottle for a fallen comrade, and instead of walking away from it when they called him for his match, he took the time to actually try to find me...most of my bjj buddies would have left the bag sitting in the middle of the floor and walked away....
